Another day, another blog.
I've got as couple of things on my mind...firstly, you know what is a really cool feeling? Walking into a comic shop and seeing the first issue of something you created over a year ago on the new releases rack. What's even cooler is seeing a 12 year old kid pick it up and thumb through it. What's even cooler than that is he asked his dad for a couple bucks so he could buy it. That's never happened to me. Outside of ComicCon or a specific signing, I've never witnessed someone purchasing one of my books before. That was cool.
I had forgotten that War of the Elementals was coming out this week and I was in the shop to pick up some extra copies of my daughter's Violet Rose #2. And there it was, War of the Elementals #1. At first I wasn't sure about the artist Darren chose, Sebastian Piriz, but I have to admit I really like how he brought the words to life...great job SB! I liked working on this book because I had always wanted to do some kind of dimensional traveling/alternate universe book. Without giving too much away, the tale is set during the First World War and centers around a corps of Flying Aces whose routine mission is anything but routine. So if you like big nasty monsters-apocalyptic-quasi-spiritual action adventure tales...this one's for you. But enough self-promotion. (Except, I hear if you buy a copy, it makes you food taste better and the air smell sweeter!)
So back to the sausage grinder. If you read last week's entry, I opined on my process of adapting William Shatner's TekWar and how you decide what to keep and what pass on. I have just about finished my first draft of Issue #1. I just sent off my notes to artist Erich Owens. He is going to start some initial character sketches based on my written descriptions. This is one of my favorite parts of the process. I see the characters looking and acting in a certain way. I see the Tek universe, the landscape, the buildings, the robots, the vehicles in my mind's eye and the action follows those ideas. Now Erich gets to take all my jumble and put his own spin on it, in his own style. That's how the characters come to life. Then of course, William Shatner needs to give it all his blessing. I'll let you know next time, how that's going.
And I know I'm going to sound like a shill, but I just saw the Bartholomew of the Scissors book...and man it looks gorgeous.
Until next time.
