Female Force: Kathy Griffin & Female Force: Ruth Handler

One is an iconic doll representing fifty years of childhood dreams and transcendent style and the other makes a living making audiences laugh at celebrity culture. But both have woven themselves into the public imagination and are subjects of Bluewater Productions' biography comic books releasing this week.

"Female Force: Kathy Griffin-The Whole Damned Story" and "Female Force: Ruth Handler, the Creator of Barbie" are scheduled to hit newsstands, comic bookstores and online venues on Wednesday, June 15.

The upcoming Griffin biography uniquely examines the comedian's early years and how it shaped and propelled her rise to one of the most outrageously outspoken and polarizing performers. It also features how Griffin also makes a difference in the world from her outreach in various communities such as the LGBT community.

"Female Force: Ruth Handler, the Creator of Barbie" follows the creation and impact of one of the most iconic and influential toys ever designed and marketed. It examines the life and legacy of its creator, the late Ruth Handler.

"Barbie and her creators, specifically Handler, are so iconic that it is hard to come up with something to say that hasn't been said, but I'm confident that this book will leave her (Barbie and Handler) maybe a bit exposed," issue author Tara Broeckel revealed. "Their collective story is so complex that often times the darker narrative is left untold."

According to Bluewater, the Handler/Barbie biography, penciled by Neil Alexander tells the story of how America's favorite fashion doll emerged from the seedy underworld of German sex symbols and cigarette shop gag gifts to become one of history's most iconic women.

"On its face, neither should have anything in common with the other, but once you read their stories, you see the common thread," said Bluewater president Darren G. Davis said of Griffin and Handler, "They are strong, influential women who have endured personal and professional challenges and have taken the marketing of their brand to whole new levels."

"Female Force: Kathy Griffin-The Whole Damned Story" was written by freelance journalist Marc Shapiro and penciled by Gene DeCicco. According to Shapiro, the Griffin title covers racy themes and some adult content-much like Griffin's public persona.

Each issue retails for $3.99 and sport a cover by artist Michał Szyksznian. Both will be available through most online venues like Amazon.com, traditional retailers as well as local comic book stores.

Bluewater first published the "Female Force" titles in 2008 as a broad examination of strong and influential women who are shaping modern history and culture. In past issues, the monthly series has featured Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Margaret Thatcher, JK Rowling, Sarah Palin and others.

Upcoming "Female Force" comic book subjects are Martha Stewart, & Ayn Rand.
